Ode to Joy

Ode to Joy was a commission for a poet named Joy who lives in England.

Getting to know Joy by email through exchanging many photographs, poems, and stories of ourselves and our surroundings empowered me to select the stone (the same as my Eternal Flame sculpture) and choose the form, which evolved over a period of several months. While it did not direct me in any way, our correspondence guided me powerfully at every stage of the work.  Usually this influence was indirect, and occurred as much through stories, poems, or even cryptic comments whose meaning emerged only later as I reflected and contemplated.

Everything about the creation of Ode to Joy was a wonderful experience for me, only partly because it allowed me to discover a wonderful new friend.  It was the very best kind of experience creating a commissioned work can be.
