This was an open, unspecified commission that turned into a portrait of my client.

Given her long habit of denying her own softness and femininity. in contrast with the actual openness and largeness of her heart and her transparency as a person, I thought it appropriate to create a mirror in which she could see these things in herself daily and be reminded.

My client lived across the street, and my “studio”. such as it was at the time, was on the sidewalk at the foot of my stairs, right where she could see me working. Until I moved house a few months later, I felt inhibited and couldn’t do much.  As soon as I moved, things came together quickly.

I find that kind of thing fascinating.
