Arbutus. 1982. 5.75" plus tree segment. Private Collection
One day I must write the full story of how this sculpture came to be.
The short version is that one evening at dusk, I “saw” this form in an arbutus post holding up the roof of a woodshed.
It was too dark to do anything about it then, because I could barely see my hand in front of my face.
Fortunately, the single bare bulb over the back porch of the house where I was staying provided pale illumination from about 30’ away. I pulled up a round of firewood to use for a stool and started carving the post immediately.
At 3:00 a.m. I had finished carving and sanding. I applied some liquid finish, and in the morning I took these photographs.
Sometimes, magic happens!
