This assignment is completely optional
Note: I developed this assignment 30 years ago in Oregon, then Carlos Galindo and I perfected it in Biol.345 (service course in Human Ecology). It exemplifies my belief that the deepest learning is always metacognitive and reflective. One student produced about 160 pages of typing for this assignment, in addition to written comments by Galindo and me. This comprised only a small part of what she did in the course, but she claimed it was the core. Galindo and I both learned to write, almost literally, from this amazing student.
This assignment is completely optional. It is the most powerfully effective vehicle I have discovered to empower intellectual growth, but is worthless if taken lightly. It is an interactive dialogue between us that invites you to examine, communicate, and transform how you operate at successively deeper and more significant levels.
Submit responses to the following 5 questions under a title page that includes at least your name and the date. Each time you submit the assignment, attach all previous submissions. Begin your response to each question on a separate page and clearly indicate which question you are responding to. Type single-spaced with wide margins, and use all of your writing skill. Depth and quality are more important than quantity, but it would be difficult to
express anything of value in less than a solid paragraph; your responses can be as long as they need to be. Use this exercise as a way to deepen your appreciation of yourself as a learner and to obtain feedback from us about this. We will read and comment on what you write, so leave plenty of room for comments (hence the wide margins). If our comments trigger responses that can't wait, that's great - - do the assignment again while it is hot.
Put everything you have into this assignment. It can dramatically and permanently transform what education is for you.
