Brotherly Love

Granite. 2012. 12” high with base. Private collection.

When my brother Gerald comes to visit, we usually do projects together. I’d been wondering what to do with this boulder from the beach, and thought it might be fun for him to do the early carving.  I described my still vague but simple idea, and  he ‘got‘ it. With a coloured pencil, we marked areas to ‘push in‘ a little by taking away stone.  I showed him how to crumble stone gently with bushing chisels in a pneumatic hammer and turned him loose.  He eased into the process, took his time, and learned how to do it by doing it.  I completed Brotherly Love in his absense, then gave it to him on his next visit.
