Going with the Flow

Myrtlewood.  2019.  25″ high x 16″ wide.  Private commission.

Myrtlewood is a tree with many names – – California bay laurel, laurel, bay laurel, pepperwood, and along the coast of Oregon, myrtlewood.  This piece of wood, a gift from a friend about 40 years ago, has been in my studio all that time, and last summer a client decided to commission a sculpture in it to celebrate her husband’s birthday.  After so many years of working primarily in stone, it was thrilling for me to discover the various challenges and opportunities of working with wood.

The title, Going with the Flow, relates to both the flowing curvature of the sculpture and the philosophy and approach to life of its recipient.
