Holding Firm at 65

Granite, marble. 2007. 9″ high with base. Private collection.

I finished this sculpture in the year of my 65th birthday and named it in honour of myself: Holding Firm at 65.  It felt so good to be healthy and fit and strong that I couldn’t resist.  Given that, I suppose it is no mere coincidence that the sculpture was purchased as a gift for a retiring executive who was similarly holding firm at that age. It resides with him in Australia.

Holding Firm at 65 began life as the head of Torso in Motion, which I dropped on the floor the night I finished it.  It broke into four pieces. The head rolled across the floor and suffered no further damage, so I carved a little male pattern baldness around the edges for contrast and mounted it on a white marble base.
