Meditation

Granite and marble. 2007. 8″ high with base. Private collection.

The meditative state I wanted to express in Meditation came fully together for me only as I designed the white marble meditation mat and the fine-grained black granite base under it, which contributes its own thrust upward.  The sculpture reminds me of meditating on a mountaintop in the Trinity Alps, where I wrote the poem What is there about risk? and experienced several of the encounters I relate in Jorstad’s for Breakfast: Animal Stories.

Meditation is an experiment in form and texture. Like several other sculptures of mine, it has only two surfaces, in this case the outer one highly polished and the inner one soft, velvety, and lighter and brighter in colour.  The sculpture is dark green granite with small, white, ellipsoid crystals, longer than wide, oriented vertically in the stone like a school of fish swimming upward, lending thrust to the design.
