Ode to Joy

Honeycomb calcite. 2010. 17″ high. Private collection.

Ode to Joy was commissioned by a poet named Joy who lives in England.  Everything about creating Ode to Joy was wonderful for me, partly because it allowed me to discover a wonderful new friend.  It was the very best experience that creating a commissioned work of art can be.

Getting to know Joy by email, through photographs, poems, and stories of ourselves and our surroundings helped me select the stone and develop the form, which evolved over a period of several months. Our correspondence guided me powerfully at every stage of the work but did not in any sense direct me.  The most significant of our exchanges were in the form of stories, poems, and photos back and forth.  Later, often much later and often as I worked, meaning emerged through reflections on those exchanges and the form evolved to express it.

Eternal Flame is carved in the same stone.
