Bird Woman
Basalt, stainless steel, and granite. 2013. 28″ high. Private Collection.
Without anything particular in mind at first, I tried various techniques at a basalt carving workshop in eastern Washington, just learning to carve basalt. As I experimented and the stone grew smaller, I imagined a winged human form. Bird Woman emerged from the exercise.
Black Surfer and Sailing on a Silent Sea are carved in chips from early stages of Bird Woman.
